Andrew booked us for a proposal Chau could not see coming. The cover was already in place, a trip to Korea with their friends. On the morning we added one more layer: a group photo session on the sand at Gwangalli, since a camera pointed at friends posing on a beach raises no questions. Mid-session, he got down on one knee.

The shoot was the cover

The shoot became its own cover: a group photo session with the friends, and a visible camera that was part of the story instead of a giveaway. We arranged the group so she faced the water at the right moment and kept Gwangan Bridge behind every setup. The morning was overcast, and the white they wore stays bright against the pale mint sea. Everyone on that sand was in on it except her.

One knee, mid-session

On cue the friends stepped back and Andrew walked her a few steps down the sand. Nothing after that was directed. We had picked our spot before the session began, so the kneel lands in a wide with Gwangan Bridge across the full frame, and the close-ups of her face and of the ring going on come right after. Her hands went to her mouth while the friends held still at the edge of frame. They walk back in to congratulate the two, and that stays in the film; they kept the secret all morning and earned their place in it.

How this was made

Filmed as The Scene.

The Scene pairs the film with a full set of photographs from the same morning, graded to match it. For this shoot the stills do work the film can't. The heart they drew in the wet sand, the proposal caught in a small cloud-shaped mirror propped on the beach, the whole group mid-jump behind the kneeling couple. The frames in this gallery are a sample from that set.
